The Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) is a federal law that was signed by President Barack Obama in 2014. The purpose of this law is to grow the economy by helping workers gain access to the continuing education, job training, job placement, and support services they need to be successful. WIOA also helps employers connect with the skilled workers they need to grow their businesses.

WIOA has helped to fuel local, one-stop career centers. A one-stop career center is a coordinator that brings together core partners, which are agencies and programs that help individuals become more employable and develop a career pathway. Some examples of core partners that our local career center works with include the Santa Cruz County Workforce Development program, Santa Cruz County Continuing Education program, and the Arizona Department of Economic Security (including its Vocational Rehabilitation and Veterans Programs).

WIOA connects individuals to the services they need to become qualified employees. Services are available for youths, adults, and dislocated workers (previously self-employed individuals). These services include continuing education (including high school equivalency and literacy programs), vocational rehabilitation, job skills training, and job placement assistance.

It’s simple and easy to get started, and we’re here to help you with the process. Visit us today or call to request your WIOA Program Information packet.

No, we are a local career center. We cannot process your unemployment application or answer questions about its current status. However, we do invite local residents to use the computers in our onsite Resource Center to manage their unemployment claims or connect with the unemployment office in Phoenix.

Our clients often hope for overnight results. It’s simply not possible to change your life overnight, but in many cases, we can help you get there much faster than you’d think. Some of our programs only take a month or two to complete. Once you earn your certification, you can use the Resource Center to get assistance with your resume, improve your job interviewing skills, and get connected to an ideal employer.

We understand that life often throws curveballs. Many of our clients have difficulty completing programs because of issues such as homelessness, substance abuse, domestic violence, financial difficulties, transportation problems, and lack of English language fluency. We offer extensive support services and community referrals to help you overcome these barriers. Talk to your career advisor about the problems you’re experiencing, and we can connect you to an in-house service or a community provider that can help you.

Absolutely! At some point, you may want to upgrade your skills further in order to qualify for a higher-paying job. For example, you may have previously earned a CNA credential and become a certified nursing assistant. You may decide to return to our local career center for assistance working toward your RN (registered nurse) license.

Because everyone has unique circumstances and goals for the future, everyone’s journey with Santa Cruz County One Stop will be a little different. In general, however, you’ll work with a single career advisor, who will guide you through the process step by step. You’ll develop your career pathway plan based on your interests and occupational goals. Then, your advisor will connect you to the necessary programs and services that will enable you to reach those goals and build a meaningful career.
